My background and what inspired me to become a teacher...

I am from a rural background. I studied in a government school. In government schools the teachers were not focused on giving the children a good education. I completed pre-university, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees (in Molecular Biology) in a government college in Kanakapura, Karnataka. After that, I enrolled in a diploma course in pharmacology, but decided not to pursue a career in pharmacy. I decided to become a teacher so I could impart good education to children.

My experience as a teacher...

I started as a teacher at DKS Hippocampus School right after I completed a bachelor’s degree in education. This school is also in Kanakapura, Karnataka. This is my first year as a teacher. I teach science to students in grades 8, 9, and 10.

I am inspired by...

I am inspired by APJ Abdul Kalam. Although he was from a rural background, had simple and humble upbringing, he rose to become a leading scientist and eventually the President of India.

My interest outside of teaching...

I love cooking.

My approach to teaching...

It is necessary to provide individual attention to students because every student is different in their abilities and learning style. We need to teach to their level first so they can grasp more advanced concepts later. If they don’t get the basics there’s no point in teaching them advanced topics. In my school, we conduct remedial classes for those students that need more time and attention to learn the basics.

My experience with Aikyam...

I took over the facilitator role from another teacher who left the school. My involvement started with the ideation phase of the current program. I believe Aikyam is great for children’s mental growth and to develop creative thinking. They are looking at societal problems not as children but as responsible members of the community. The program is giving them the opportunity to identify problems in their community, understand their impact and feel empowered to find and propose solutions. Even adults in our communities neglect the problems around them. What the children are doing inspire us and serves as a reminder that we should do something to address our societal problems as well.
