Aikyam Change Ambassador

SBVM Hippocampus School

Gulbarga, Karnataka, India

My background…

I have completed a bachelor’s degree in engineering (Electronics and Communication) and a master’s degree in technology (Digital Communications and Networking).  I have always wanted to pursue a career in teaching. Teaching allows me to learn something new every day. Even if the syllabus is the same each year, the experience of teaching a new set of students each year is always fresh and new.

My teaching experience...

I have been teaching for nearly 8 years. I joined SBVM last year and teach science to 6th through 10th grade students. Initially, I started teaching in a school run by my uncle. I then joined Malgudi Public School in Gulbarga. When I was an engineering student, I was tutoring school children. After completing my master’s degree, I joined the same college as an assistant professor. During the COVID lockdown, when all the schools and colleges were closed, I went back to tutoring.

About this school...

SVBM is near a town called Gulbarga in Karnataka, but majority of the students come from nearby villages. Most of them come from farming communities. Their parents are typically not well educated but want to give the children better opportunities by educating them.

My inspiration...

I was Inspired by my professor in Engineering college. I admired the way he used to tackle challenges and the way he treated his students and staff. I was his student at first and after completion of my M. Tech I worked under him as an assistant professor. The way he taught, interacted with his students and encouraged everyone to try new ideas and apply different methods to teaching was inspirational to me.

My Aikyam experience...

Aikyam is a new concept for me. It is a new way for the children to learn and develop skills – a platform that promotes students to be independent and make decisions on their own. There are so many changes in society these days, and there will be more in years to come. Later in life, when they move out of this area, they will know how to deal with various situations they will face because of the skills they acquire in the Aikyam program.

The students are engaged and happy. They immerse themselves in activities like Daily Pondering which they seem to enjoy a lot. They are coming up with good ideas. People that they talk to are always interested in learning about Aikyam and what they are doing in the program.
