My background...

I completed a diploma in education first which qualified me to teach in a primary school. I then completed a bachelor’s degree in in education which qualified me to teach in a high school. I have been teaching for 8 years. My teaching career started in a government school where I taught remedial English. Then I moved to this school where I teach social sciences and English to grades 6 through 9.

I was interested in teaching from my childhood. While studying I was tutoring other students. I like being with children.

My approach to teaching...

I believe interaction with the students is very important. I try to involve the students fully so they will be interested and engage fully. By using examples that are relevant to them in their surroundings, the topics become more relatable for the students.

My role model...

I studied in an Urdu medium school. I had a tutor that used to teach me English after school. I was unable to pay him even the nominal fee that he charged. But he never asked me for money. He was a full-time teacher in a high school, and he would tutor me after a full day in school. His enthusiasm to teach was the same even after having worked a full day in school. I draw inspiration from his dedication and concern for his students.

My Aikyam experience...

The children are very interested in Aikyam club. They are very creative and participate without inhibition. During the facilitators’ training the teachers were more reticent to participate in the hands-on activities, but the children have no problem in jumping in to do the same activities. They completed these activities faster than we did. They are also more aware of societal issues faced by their communities than we give them credit for. These are aspects of the children’s abilities and awareness that surprised us.
