My background...
I completed a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from Karnataka University and a post-graduate degree in visual arts from Bangalore University. Initially I worked as a freelance graphic designer and video editor. I started teaching at this school as an arts and crafts teacher in 2022. I teach students from grades 1 through 9.
What inspired me to become a teacher...
When I was doing my post graduate course , I had the opportunity to participate in competitions and workshops in modern and contemporary art. During that time I got inspired by how they taught us. I then started my own art classes. The principal at this school came to know about it and encouraged me to join the school as an art teacher.
My approach to teaching art...
I teach using traditional methods, materials, and techniques. The students learn how to use colors, brushes, canvases, and natural materials like mud and stone. For craft I use waste materials like newspapers, plastic bottles. I collect materials that have been disposed of as trash and teach the students how to use them to create works of art.
My Aikyam experience...
Initially the students didn’t appear to be interested and didn’t engage actively. But within a few sessions they understood what the program required them to do and started to participate enthusiastically. They are discussing the problems they see in their communities and exchanging ideas. Aikyam is a unique program. I see this as an opportunity for the students to use their art skills to communicate with their community and make positive social impact.
